How to Get Your Car Rain-Ready
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, your likelihood of a crash is higher when the rain starts to fall and pavement is wet than during wintery conditions like snow, sleet and ice. Make sure that your car is rain-ready by checking these simple features:
- Check your tire tread, if it is low then it is worth replacing your tires.
- Tire pressure is important as well, be sure to check your tire pressure at least once a month.
- Make sure that your windshield wipers are working properly, ideally they should be replaced every year depending on your environment. If they are streaking or you notice rubber pieces starting to disconnect then it is time to replace your windshield wipers.
- Always make sure your headlights, taillights and brake lights are properly working, not only is this safe for any driving but these are especially useful while driving in rain conditions as vision is already decreased.
Tips for Driving Safely in the Rain
To ensure that you are safe while driving in rain we have made a list of tips for driving safely in the rain. In Vermont we know that weather can change quickly and without notice and it is important to remember to always drive safely to help keep yourself and other drivers safe.
- Slow Down: Driving too fast for wet conditions is very dangerous because your tires lose traction with the precipitation.
- Back Off: A good rule of thumb is to stay about 5 seconds behind the car in front of you.
- Know When to Lean on Technology, and When Not to: Do not depend on cruise control, adaptive cruise control or forward collision warning systems during the rain. Wet weather may affect the systems’ sensors and reduce their reliability.
