2018 Ford Mustang GT Performance Pack
If we were going to describe the 2018 Ford Mustang in a single word, it would be performance. This especially rings true if you take the upcoming new GT version of the famous Ford sports car into account. When the 2018 Mustang debuted to the automotive world this winter, the Heritage Ford Blog let readers know about many of its newest changes including its new engine lineup and brand new exterior color option. Some more details have been released that will of special interested to potential buyers looking to get the most power possible from their car. The 2018 Ford Mustang GT Performance Pack adds a whole new dimension to what the new Mustang will be capable of delivering.
What comes with the new equipment package?
The main goal of the 2018 Ford Mustang GT Performance Pack is to make more downforce at higher speeds for improved handling. This means adding a more advanced front spiltter as well as a redesigned rear spoiler. The new “coffee table splitter” is reported to add 24 pounds of downforce at 80 mph. On the rear of the car, the new spoiler is said to make 60 pounds of downforce, also measured at 80 mph.
What kind of tires does the new Mustang have?
When people are discussing the performance of cars like the 2018 Mustang, words like horsepower and torque are thrown around quite a bit. However, they are overlooking a pretty important component, the tires. It doesn’t matter how much horsepower a car makes if it doesn’t have the appropriate tires, not much us going to happen. Ford engineers took a look at the Ford GT supercar and the Shelby GT350® Mustang and the two cars’ sets of Michelin tires for inspiration.
The 2018 Mustang GT Performance Pack will use staggered-sized Michelin Pilot Sport 4S 275/40-19 tires on the rear and 255/40-19 tires on the front. During testing, a Mustang GT using these tires was able to produce a zero-to-60 mph time in the sub-four-second range, using the selectable drag racing driving mode.
“We took everything we learned at the track, including feedback from professional drivers, to create a tire custom-tuned for Mustang GT,” said Gary Swingle, Michelin tire engineer said in a Ford press release.
Why did Ford choose Michelin tires?
Choosing the perfect set of tires to be outfitted on the 2018 Ford Mustang GT Performance Pack was no small feat. Engineers working on the car chose the Pilot Sport 4S because Michelin was able to manufacture the tire in such a way that would be the most advantageous to drivers. The tire features ‘an ultra-reactive tread pattern (that) adapts continuously to the road’ according to new information released by Ford.
